For a while, I had avoided the type of composition I like to call the “thing-in-a-box”. This is the type of composition is exactly what it sounds like: an object presented in a sort of anthropological way, like on display in a museum. I think I was too hasty in rejecting the thing-in-a-box. These paintings employ this explicit approach to representation in order to create a sort of equivalence between “objects” of different ontological status.
